Virtual Reality - The new medium that will take over the world?

The first use of the phrase "Virtual Reality" dates back to 1938, when a French dramatist used the phrase "la realite virtuelle" to describe the nature of the play's characters. Over the years, this concept has appeared in numerous books, novels, essays, tv episodes, etc.

However, it wasn't until lately that people were able to process and present the product satisfactorily at a reasonable price. Virtual reality has benefited humanity in numerous ways, despite the fact that its definition has changed slightly since it first emerged. And that brings up the question

What is Virtual Reality?

The easiest way to describe it is as an experience that uses a digitally simulated 360-degree environment to activate and react to human inputs, giving the impression of a continuous reality.

Additionally, virtual reality has helped many concepts that were previously deemed to be impractical come into existence.

Virtual Reality does have a variety of advantages such as:

1) It can transform the way of education : Virtual study, in which a teacher teaches the student with the use of virtual reality equipment, has now overtaken the old text-based learning method. This technology enables the user to view an imagined setting based on the  users desired  subject and conduct analysis inside.

2)It creates a realistic world: In virtual reality, the user is immersed in a world based on the subjects they are studying or enjoying themselves in. The user perceives the produced virtual reality as though it were the real world, even though it isn't. Therefore, assist them in experiencing the present reality more fully.

The user is engaged in a world based on the subjects they are studying or having fun in when using virtual reality, which produces a realistic environment. Even if it isn't, the user thinks the generated virtual reality is the real world. Therefore, help them to completely experience the present world without physically being present .

3)Enhances interest and engagement in a subject: A person can experience a situation they have learned in their textbooks through the use of virtual reality. There has been a lot of interest in the topic of virtual reality or virtual reality training since practical education is more engaging and fascinating .

4) Helping doctors: By executing high-risk procedures on a virtual patient before doing them on the real one, surgeons can reduce the likelihood that any surgical failures will occur.

Despite its many benefits, it also has several drawbacks :

1) Costly implementation: Putting virtual reality into practice is an expensive process. Only a select few people could afford the expensive technology and equipment utilized in virtual reality. Therefore, the initial installation of this kind of equipment is expensive.

2)Developing only technical skills with no interaction: Although technical expertise is established, virtual reality experiences are based on pre-recorded environments, therefore there is no room for teacher involvement. As a result, the learner's uncertainties persist until any other knowledgeable individual shares their knowledge of the subject.

3) Technology is complicated: Virtual reality technology needs to be acquired in order to acquire abilities, and since it is difficult not everybody can grasp on how to use it, training is necessary in order to learn the complex technology.

4)Addiction to virtual reality: It has frequently been seen that adolescents and a small number of adults develop physical addictions to virtual reality. Addiction thus causes a variety of problems, and youngsters will also neglect their regular schoolwork in favor of playing video games all the time.

5) Effects on the actual human body: Many people who use virtual reality have eye strain, dizziness, and nausea disorders. This is as a result of the illusion that virtual reality creates.

6) Not interested in the actual world: As people get dependent on virtual reality, they no longer desire to interact with the real world .  They no longer want to interact with the real world because the virtual world has become their actual world.

7) Psychological harm: People who grow hooked to virtual reality also experience psychological effects, hence it is advised that people refrain from using virtual reality for extended periods of time.

Similar to a coin, virtual reality. It has two sides, one of which is beneficial and the other is harmful.

Now we move on to discuss the different types of virtual reality

there are mainly three types of virtual reality:

  • Non-immersive simulation
  • Partially-immersive simulation
  • Fully- Immersive simulation
  • Augmented reality.
  • Collaborative VR.
1 )  Non - Immersive simulation

This technology provides a computer-generated environment, but allows the user to stay aware of and keep control of their physical environment. Non-immersive virtual reality systems rely on a computer or video game console, display, and input devices like keyboards, mice, and controller.

2) Semi Immersive Virtual Reality

This technology, a cross between non-immersive and fully-immersive virtual reality, can appear as a 3D area or virtual environment where a person can move on their own via a computer screen or headset. Semi-immersive virtual reality does not require users to move.

3) Fully Immersive Virtual  Reality

A spectator can alter and interact with their environment by being sucked into another actual or imagined world during an immersive experience. A combination of sights, sound, and technology is used in immersive experiences .

4) Augmented reality

a method of giving a composite picture by overlaying a computer-generated image on the user's perspective of the real world.

5) Collaborative VR

Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) are distributed, computer-enabled virtual spaces or locations where people can come together and interact with real people, virtual items, and agents. The level of representational richness in CVEs varies widely, ranging from 3D virtual reality to 2D and even text-based settings.

The technology will be much more advanced than it is now, and it may even have capabilities that people today cannot even comprehend. We may even have adequate resources to create and implement new ideas.
